RECOVERING FROM THE PANDEMIC: EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW WHEN LOOKING FOR A NEW JOB
James Reed, the chairman of recruitment firm Reed, has warned that a significant number of jobs in the UK could be at risk as the country navigates the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Speaking to The Independent, Reed explained that the pandemic had accelerated the shift towards automation and digitization, and that many job that were previously considered safe were now at risk.
Reed suggested that those in the so-called “JAMS” category – those who are “just about managing” – were particularly at risk of losing their jobs. This group includes many lower-paid workers who may be employed in roles that can be easily automated or outsourced.
Despite these concerns, Reed also expressed optimism about the future of the UK’s economy. He noted that there were many opportunities for job creation in areas such as green energy, infrastructure, and healthcare. However, he emphasized that it would be important for the government and the private sector to work together to ensure that workers were equipped with the skills and training they needed to take advantage of these opportunities.
Reed’s comments highlight the challenges facing the UK as it seeks to recover from the pandemic and build a more resilient and equitable economy. While there are certainly risks and uncertainties ahead, there are also opportunities for growth and innovation. The key will be ensuring that workers are supported and prepared for the changes that lie ahead.
