Veterinary Technician

Rossdales Veterinary Surgeons is seeking to appoint a Veterinary Technician to join our dedicated and professional team working within the Hospital and Diagnostic Centre, based in Exning. The role will require a reliable, hard-working and motivated individual with outstanding attention to detail, who is looking for a rewarding and challenging position within the equine veterinary industry. Please note, this is a physically demanding role that will require work outside in varied weather conditions. The principal responsibilities are to assist the vets with orthopaedic assessments, including handling a range of horses therefore applicants should be both confident and competent handling all types, sizes and ages of horses and ponies. Our equine patients range from foals, youngstock, breeding stock (including mares and stallions), to racehorses, competition horses, pleasure horses and ponies. Depending on experience this role may involve riding a range of horses for clinical examinations. The successful candidate will possess good general knowledge and experience in horse care and stable duties. Experience of the equine industry is essential; however full training will be provided to further expand your skills where necessary. The main aspects of this role include (but are not limited to): · All aspects of handling different horses (including colts/stallions) e.g. movement of horses between boxes, trot-up areas and the arena. Hold horses in imaging and treatment rooms and for veterinary inspection/veterinary procedures and lameness examinations. · You may be required to ride horses undergoing clinical examinations; this includes pleasure horses, performance/sports horses and racehorses. · You may be required to travel out to clients’ yards with the vet to perform procedures. · You may be required to bandage horses after medications and other treatments. This is at the discretion of the attending vet and if you are asked to do this, you will be given appropriate training. · You may be required to assist in the loading/unloading of horses at the Exning site. · Ensure horses are clean and tidy before they are discharged, or communicate this need to the yard team if necessary. · Assist the imaging department and assisting vets working in the imaging department to work up cases. This could include, but is not limited to, holding horses for imaging procedures of all kinds, plate holding in x-ray and helping in the, bone scan, CT and MRI departments. · Assist vets in other procedures which may include clipping and prepping for nerve block/ ultrasound/other treatment or diagnostic procedures. · Work in conjunction with the yard team and secretarial staff to admit and discharge horses. Fill out necessary paperwork when admitting horses onto the yard. Enter data onto the practice management system to reflect the movement of horses, etc. Checking all horses are tagged appropriately (mane and tail) and replacing any missing tags. · Liaise with the Yard Team or vet in charge of the case at any time during the horse’s admission/discharge and while the horse is resident at Rossdales regarding any concerns you may have to the needs/welfare of that horse. · Care of medical equipment and imaging equipment to include setting up, shutting down, cleaning and handling of medical and medical imaging equipment, e.g. scopes, scanners and shockwave machines. · You may have an examination room allocated to you. If so, you are required to ensure this room is clean and stocked at the beginning or end of each day and regularly throughout the day. · You will be responsible for the general cleanliness of the clinical and non-clinical areas in which you work and will participate in daily and weekly cleaning procedures when appropriate and in conjunction with your colleagues. · All Rossdales’ support staff are required to have a flexible approach to their duties and may, at any time, be required to cover absence and illness in closely associated departments across the site, sometimes at short notice including general horse care (mucking out, feeding etc.).
