Full Job Description

Small Animal Vet, Henley-on-Thames Veterinary Surgeons looking for a busy practice in which they can broaden their experience and skills – look no further! We are a truly independent 100% small animal practice, with our main site in the beautiful town of Henley on Thames, and a small branch in the nearby village of Twyford. We enjoy a semi-rural location, meaning that we have excellent access to both the rolling hills of the Chilterns and the bright lights of Central London (via a quick train ride). We are surrounded by stunning countryside, perfect for long dog walks, river pursuits and quality time off (just ask our vet Erik, who has walked most of it!). Our main building in Henley is a little bit tired, BUT we have exciting plans afoot for a swanky new building in the countryside on the outskirts of Henley. Covid has stalled the build, but we hope to have it completed by April 2023. This new build will create many opportunities for us to increase our services, and we welcome input from the whole team as to how to use them. The candidate we are looking for will have already been employed in small animal practice for a minimum of two years, and have a basic competence and confidence in general medicine and surgery. They should be looking for a busy practice in which they can broaden their scope and hone their skills by learning from a vet and nurse team whose experience ranges from 39 years to one month! We also expect to learn from you, as veterinary medicine moves on at a giddying rate, and you will have learned stuff that we haven’t. We are a naturally collaborative team and you will be expected to ask questions and make suggestions too. When we say independent, we mean it – and that does mean that we cover our own out of hours service and provide 24/7 hospitalisation for our patients. We believe this provides the best possible patient care, and also gives our vets the most job satisfaction as they can keep ownership of their cases through to completion. We also acknowledge that you could choose to work in a practice that doesn’t include these less popular shifts – but you don’t know what you’re missing! Some of the most exciting and rewarding cases happen in the middle of the night or on a lazy Sunday afternoon, but if you find yourself faced with something a bit too exciting for one vet to handle, or simply something you have not done before, then there will always be a colleague willing to come to the rescue. Our night nurses remain in the building overnight, and take the incoming phone calls, look after inpatients and call you if needed. Having said all that, we are also recruiting for a dedicated night vet to take some of the shifts and free up more daytime hours from the vet team. If you might be that night vet or know someone who is looking for night work then please do get in touch. The Package:
  • Salaries start from £30k (newly qualified) increasing to £60k (for the most experienced) with annual pay reviews.
  • £3k annual CPD allowance. We encourage our staff to develop and use special fields of interest. Where possible, we will provide a rota that allows you to work in the areas that you are most interested in – which of course benefits both you and our patients.
  • BHSF Health Insurance (health cash plan which covers dental and optical treatments as well as a range of therapies. You can also claim back on things like hearing aids or overnight stays in hospital – plus much more.
  • Bring your dog(s) to work (yes Lenny, we know you’re a cat…)
  • Generous staff discount for your own pets
  • 30 days paid annual leave (including bank holidays) – with service based increases
  • Bank holiday supplement for shifts worked (which are shared equally within the team).
  • Pension
  • Company Sick Pay (long service benefit)
  • Birthday Leave
  • Paid Professional Fees (RCVS, VDS)
  • Uniform
  • Annual Flu Vaccination
  • Social Events – in the past these have included boat trips up the Thames, afternoon tea, lockdown bingo (!), a limo trip to the West End, and a gorge scrambling trip to Wales (we won’t mention the water poisoning we all brought back!).
