An exciting opportunity has arisen for a position as a Specialist Cancer Pharmacist at the Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Our Cancer Pharmacists work closely with the multi-disciplinary team both in outpatient settings and at ward level for providing patient-focused pharmacy services to our cancer patients. You will be supported by the Pharmacy Cancer Team, a motivated and experienced team of specialist pharmacists and technicians, in striving to achieve excellence in our care. The Great Western Hospital is a busy district general hospital that provides a wide range of haematology and oncology services to a diverse population across Swindon and Wiltshire. We are a JACIE accredited centre for haematopoietic stem cell transplant services and we follow the Thames Valley Cancer Strategic Network treatment protocols.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will work as part of a multidisciplinary team providing patient-centred, specialist clinical services to the day therapy unit, in-patient haematology unit, haematopoeitic stem cell transplant services, cancer outpatients and paediatric oncology outpatients. Other responsibilities include implementation of new medicines, management of the blueteq system for high cost cancer medicines and participation in quality improvement projects within Cancer Services and Pharmacy.
This is a rewarding role which requires good clinical cancer knowledge, effective communication and excellent prioritisation skills. The candidate will ideally have experience in oncology and/or haematology and will be supported to further develop specialist skills within this area, including gaining a non-medical prescribing qualification.
Experience in oncology/haematology is highly desirable for the band 7 position, however if the candidate has substantial clinical pharmacy experience, the appropriate skills and is motivated to learn we would also consider a Band 6 training position. Structured cancer and aseptic training would be given with opportunities to develop clinical knowledge actively encouraged, including the option to undertake a PG diploma in Clinical Oncology. As the candidate develops their clinical skills and undertakes more responsibilities within the team, there would be career progression to become a Band 7 Pharmacist.
