Job Details

We are the only independent veterinary group in Huddersfield and are a thriving multi-centre mixed practice with 36 vets and 7 surgeries across Huddersfield and South Halifax, including our hospital at Almondbury. We combine truly cutting-edge training, facilities, equipment, and premises with good old fashioned personal care. You might also recognise us as the home of TV’s the Yorkshire Vet. Our state-of-the-art hospital provides high standard first opinion care with referral standard equipment. Designed with the comfort of our patients, clients and our team as a priority, the hospital has separate wards for cats, dogs and exotics, along with an ICU, 5 theatres, dental suite including 2 dental tables and dental x-ray, imagining suite providing CT scanner, digital x-ray, ultrasound with linear & amp; cardiac probes and scopes for arthroscopy, endoscopy and rhinoscopy. We also have a monthly visiting MRI scanner and all the kit needed to perform lap spays, fracture repairs, TPLOs, MMP’s and spinal surgery.   We benefit from having our own rehabilitation centre, with 2 hydrotherapy treadmills, led by Rhona and Jill, who are both certified canine rehabilitation practitioners. We also have visiting specialists including Neil Palmer, who runs his Cancer Care for Pets referral service from the hospital, Robert White who visits to perform more complex surgeries like liver shunts, Ultrasound for Pets who are with us weekly for more complex scans and echos and advanced practitioner in SA dermatology, Alison Shearer, who regularly visits. We won’t throw you in at the deep end here, when you start with us, we’ll provide all the support you will need. Our GDP advisors, Caroline and Niall, are ready and waiting to offer a new grad guidance and support. At the other end of the spectrum, for an experienced vet this is great place to develop your career and your interests and future partnership opportunities are also a possibility. There is also a wealth of knowledge within our experienced team of 36 vets, which includes certificate holders in surgery, diagnostic imaging, ECC, and those currently undertaking certificates in internal medicine, surgery, ophthalmology and ECC. We believe in working together for the benefit of the patients, clients and most importantly, the team – providing a supportive, collaborative environment is one of the reasons our staff retention is so good, with many of the team staying with us since completing their training/school. We want you to have the opportunity to take your career to the next level, we will encourage your ambitions and help you to achieve your goals, with supported exposure to a variety of cases and surgeries. We are a friendly team, who enjoy working together and there is a very relaxed vibe. There are no egos here and no question is too trivial to ask. This is Lizzie’s experience of working with us since  a new grad; ‘ I have worked at Donaldson’s since graduating 4 years ago and saw practice as a student for many years before that and I could not have asked for a better start to my career. There is always support available, both from the directors but also the large network of Vets and nurses across the group, many of whom have become good friends over the last few years. We are a hard-working team, and the days are busy, providing a diverse medical and surgical caseload whilst also providing the opportunity for vets to pursue their own clinical interests at work resulting in great job satisfaction’   Our full-time vets work a 4-day week (8.15am – 6.15pm) with one late shift (until 8.15pm) roughly every 2 – 3 weeks and we are working towards 1: 6 Saturdays (8.15am-3pm). Our big news is that we will soon have a dedicated OOH team, so that we offer the best of both worlds, if OOH is not for you, you don’t have to take part in the rota, but there is the opportunity to join in if you want to, or even dip in and out! If you did decide OOHs is for you, then our OOHs rota is 1:19 weekday evenings and 1:10 weekends. At the weekends there are 2 vets working, so you only need to cover the days and one night per weekend and then you get a half day on the Monday, plus there is also a bonus scheme for the OOHs work, which is a 15% share of the quarterly OOH revenue, shared on a pro-rata basis for the number of nights worked in that quarter. A half day is also given after a weekday night on call. We love getting together and sharing ideas at our monthly clinical club or learning new skills at any of the CPD events held here, where the practice also provides food and drink. We also get together outside of work, enjoying the free bar and food at our Christmas party or having a good knee up at our post lockdown summer barn party. Set in West Yorkshire, Huddersfield is a traditional market town. With the mountain range of the Pennines to the west and the stunning views and wild, rugged scenery of the nearby Marsden Moor, this is a beautiful place to explore by foot, bike or you can even take to the skies with the popular local activity of paragliding. What we offer:
  • Salary of £34,000 to £75,000 depending on experience plus OOH bonus if you opt for OOH
  • 21.5 days annual leave plus bank holidays (worked out on a 4-day working week)
  • CPD budget of £3,000 over 2 years, with certificates supported and funded
  • Professional fees for RCVS, BSAVA and BVA paid
  • Visas sponsored
  • Car and accommodation available if needed
