Our quest is to completely eradicate preventable medication errors and provide a world beating pharmacy service for our patients and organisation. Our Foundation pharmacists are key to the success of this journey and we aim to recruit the best, provide the best training and keep the best (that’s you by the way). You will work alongside the rest of our team, delivering a service where ‘average is just not good enough’. We offer a multitude of varied rotations, each of four month duration, such as respiratory & acute medicine, frailty, digestive diseases, major trauma & orthopaedics, patient services and a unique rotation supporting Brighton University undergraduate placements as an educator and practice supervisor. We hope to have rotations available with our partners in Mental Health and Primary Care in the near future. For each rotation you will be assigned a practice supervisor and your development will be supported using our internal appraisal system and the Royal Pharmaceutical Society Foundation Pharmacist Framework with your designated educational supervisor. Your feedback is important too and will be actively sought as part of monthly communication cascades’ with our experienced Educational Programme Director for Foundation Pharmacists, and during the Local Faculty Group meetings. The Trust provides many inter-professional learning opportunities which would also support your development. We are a major regional university teaching hospital, providing general acute services and tertiary services for patients across Sussex and the south east of England. We work as one team across two sites; Brighton and Haywards Heath and have the infrastructure and support for band 6 pharmacist’s development with experience of supporting band 6 to 7 progression posts. The Trust is big and busy and is a specialist in vascular, cardiac, renal, major trauma, cancer, neurosciences, stroke, ophthalmology, infectious diseases and HIV. Our Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital at the Brighton site hosts many specialist paediatric services. We currently have four joint academic clinical lecturer appointments, an interface pharmacist with our lead commissioner, an embedded pharmacist with NHSE and two consultant pharmacists working within cardiology and HIV as areas of expertise. Our Pharmacy team is led by Mike Cross but all staff get to identify and fix problems through participation in our weekly ‘Patient First – Opportunity Boards’ and can escalate the bigger issues to managers who in turn have been trained to sort things out. Our most recent review by Health Education England of our Pharmacy department education infrastructure concluded that ‘our trainees felt well supported by the senior staff members and that they were very approachable’. To participate in the provision of the Trust’s pharmacy services with due regard to all legal and ethical issues, demonstrating competence and development through the rotation. Rotations could include medicine (e.g. acute medicine, respiratory and frailty), surgery (e.g. digestive diseases, trauma & orthopaedics), medicines information, patient services and the University of Brighton Clinical Lecturer rotations supporting undergraduate placements. There will be a named practice supervisor in each rotation to support development of the band 6 pharmacist. To ensure patients’ treatment with medicines is safe and effective through the provision of advice to prescribers, nursing staff, patients and carers. To participate in training and development and supervision of less experienced or less qualified pharmacy staff e.g. preregistration pharmacists, pharmacy undergraduate students.
