THE CHALLENGE OF THE COST OF LIVING: ARE PEOPLE ACCESSING EYECARE?

Optegra, the UK’s largest private ophthalmic services provider, has warned that the rising cost of living is putting pressure on people’s ability to access essential eyecare.

According to Optegra, many people are struggling to afford the cost of eye tests, glasses, and contact lenses, with some even delaying appointments or avoiding treatment altogether.

The company’s concerns are supported by recent research from the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB), which found that one in three people with sight loss had not had an eye test in the last two years. More education needs to be given to people on why is it important to take care of your eyes to help resolve this.

Optegra’s Chief Medical Director, Mr. Robert Morris, said: “Eye health is essential for maintaining good quality of life, but rising living costs are making it increasingly difficult for people to access the care they need. We’re seeing more patients who are struggling financially, and this is a worrying trend.”

To address these concerns, Optegra is calling on the government and other healthcare providers to take action to make eye care more affordable and accessible for everyone.

“We need to ensure that everyone has access to affordable eye care, regardless of their income,” said Mr. Morris. “This includes reducing the cost of eye tests, glasses, and contact lenses, as well as investing in new technologies and treatments that can improve outcomes for patients.”

In addition to advocating for greater investment in eye care, Optegra is also taking steps to make its own services more accessible and affordable. The company recently launched a new payment plan that allows patients to spread the cost of treatment over several months, as well as offering discounts for patients who refer friends or family members to its clinics.

“We’re committed to ensuring that everyone has access to the best possible eye care, regardless of their financial situation,” said Mr. Morris. “By working together as a community, we can make a real difference and help to ensure that no one is left behind.”
